About Penn Station New York

New York Penn Station is NJ Transit’s busiest hub, connecting to the vast NJ Transit rail system via only 2 tracks below the Hudson River. This limitation is often worsened in the evening by maintenance bringing the connection down to a single track in and out of New York. To fix this, two additional tracks are being built in a new tunnel, but this is only expected to be completed by 2035, if there are no construction delays.
New York Penn Station is owned by Amtrak and served by the Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Morris & Essex lines, with PATH trains nearby and all the buses of the Port Authority Bus Terminal a 15 minute walk away. Some Gladstone Branch and Raritan Valley Line trains run here too.
Track numbers at Penn Station are usually announced about 10 minutes before departure. NJT Tracker shows your track the moment it is announced, and often a predicted track before that, so you don't have to wait in the crowd, staring at a screen.
Not to be confused with Newark Penn Station in New Jersey.
Announced tracks and train statuses at Penn Station New York come from NJ Transit's DepartureVision, the same information as the screens in the station.

Track predictor for Penn Station New York

At Penn Station New York, NJ Transit usually announces your track about 10 minutes before departure. Everyone waits under the screens, then hurries to the stairs together. NJT Tracker predicts the track earlier, so you can already be at the right stairs when it's announced.
The prediction comes from months of real departures at Penn Station New York: the track each train usually gets, which tracks are already taken, and what the other trains are doing right now. We show it only when we're confident. Right now that's about 7 in 10 trains, and it's right 99% of the time, usually about 25 minutes before departure.
A predicted track looks different from an announced one. It's marked PRED with a dashed outline, and you can tap it to see how sure we are. The moment NJ Transit announces the real track, it replaces the prediction.
Questions about tracks at Penn Station New York

Which track will my train leave from?

Find your train on the live board above. A track in amber marked PRED is our prediction; a plain track number is the one NJ Transit has announced. If there is no track yet, we don't know either, and the board updates the moment one appears.

When are tracks announced at Penn Station New York?

Usually about 10 minutes before departure, sometimes less. Every other NJ Transit station shows the track from the moment the train appears on the screens. Penn Station New York is the only one where you have to wait, which is why the predictor exists only here.

How accurate is the track predictor?

Over the last month, 99 out of 100 predictions we showed matched the track NJ Transit announced. We measure this every day against the announced tracks, and each predicted track shows its own chance when you tap it.

Why doesn't every train get a prediction?

We only show a track when we're confident. When the usual track is taken or the pattern isn't clear, we show nothing rather than a guess. Right now about 7 in 10 trains get a prediction.

Does this work at Newark Penn Station or other stations?

No, and it doesn't need to. At Newark Penn Station and every other NJ Transit station the track is shown as soon as the train appears on the screens, and NJT Tracker shows it the same moment. Not sure which Penn Station you want? This page is New York. Newark Penn Station has its own page.
