How it works
Penn Station New York is the only NJ Transit station where you can't see your track until shortly before departure. Everywhere else the track shows from the moment the train appears on the screens. Here is how we fill that gap.
1
We remember where each train usually goes
For months we've recorded which track every train got at Penn Station New York. Most trains use the same few tracks day after day.
2
We rule out the tracks that are taken
A train that's boarding or was just posted is already using its track, so yours can't get that one.
3
We look at what the other trains are doing right now
Delays and early arrivals shuffle the tracks around. The prediction updates as the board changes.
4
We only show a track when we're confident
When the prediction isn't clear enough, the board shows a dash instead of a track until NJ Transit posts it. That's why not every train gets one.
Common questions
Which track will my train leave from?
Open the live Penn Station board and find your train. If we're confident, you'll see a predicted track with a dashed outline about 25 minutes before departure. When NJ Transit posts the track, it replaces the prediction.
When are tracks posted at Penn Station New York?
Usually about 10 minutes before departure. NJT Tracker shows the posted track the moment it appears on the screens. Our prediction usually comes about 15 minutes before that, around 25 minutes before your train leaves.
How accurate is the track predictor?
Over the last week, 99.6% of predictions matched the track NJ Transit posted. Tap or hover any predicted track on the board to see the current number.
Why doesn't every train get a prediction?
We show a track only when we're confident. Some trains switch tracks often and some times of day are harder to call, so about 8 in 10 trains get a prediction and the rest show a dash instead of a track until NJ Transit posts it.
Does this work at Newark Penn Station or other stations?
Only Penn Station New York needs it. At every other NJ Transit station, Newark Penn Station included, the track shows from the moment the train appears on the screens, and NJT Tracker shows the same track.
